Please see the CDC’s Travel Guidelines website and the Department of State’s COVID-19 Travel Information page for information about international travel risks and restrictions. Anyone traveling internationally is strongly urged to follow CDC guidance on returning from international travel : Get tested with a viral test 3-5 days after travel AND stay home and self-quarantine for a full 7 days after travel. Please see UA mandatory testing guidelines for Spring 2021 here . Even if you test negative, stay home and self-quarantine for the full 7 days. If your test is positive, isolate yourself to protect others from getting infected. If you don’t get tested, stay home and self-quarantine for 10 days after travel. Avoid being around people who are at increased risk for severe illness for 14 days, whether you get tested or not. New COVID-19 Testing Requirements for All Air Passengers Arriving in the United States Before you return to the U.S., you will need to get tested no more than 3 days before you travel. You will need to show your negative result to the airline before you board your flight, or be prepared to show documentation of recovery. This can be proof of a recent positive viral test and a letter from your healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel. Travelers should also be aware that foreign nationals may be barred entry back into the United States. Please see the CDC announcement on travelers prohibited from entry to the U.S. for more information. FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PROVOST : All future non-essential international travel for academic and business reasons by University of Arizona faculty, staff, and students remains suspended and will not be authorized until further notice due to the current outbreak of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). While international travel for academic and business reasons is not advised at this time, essential international travel for academic and business reasons by University faculty, staff, and students is no longer completely suspended. If travel is deemed essential, prior approval will need to be obtained from the appropriate Senior Vice President responsible for the traveler’s unit. Please see below for how international travel can be deemed essential and authorized to proceed. Note: This guidance applies to academic and business travel, but the University recommends the same considerations for personal travel. For international travel to be authorized, it must be follow a formal process as outlined below to be deemed essential travel. Please note : international travel for the purposes of conducting research will be follow a slightly different process than non-research travel. CRITERIA FOR ESSENTIAL TRAVEL: University Departments may deem travel essential if AT LEAST ONE of the following is likely to occur should the travel be cancelled or significantly delayed: Loss of grant or contract funding, failure to meet required deadlines/deliverables, and/or loss of ability to gather time-sensitive, seasonal data. Significant damage to relationship with institutional partner/community agency. Significant delay or negative impact on career progression for assistant professors/early career researcher. Significant delay in academic progress, degree completion, or graduation. Significance of research for understanding and mitigating the public health, economic, and social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL FOR RESEARCH: Process: Traveler completes a Research Innovation & Impact (RII) Restarting Research Checklist and obtains RII approval via email for the checklist as well as applicable compliance protocols. Traveler registers trip in the University Global Travel Registry and provides documentation justifying why the trip should be considered essential University travel. Inclusive in the registration process, travelers complete a Coronavirus supplemental travel questionnaire with questions that pertain to mitigating risk while traveling during the Coronavirus pandemic. In justifying why the trip should be considered essential, travelers should explain how the travel meets at least one of the criteria specified above for "essential travel". UA Global Travel composes a travel risk analysis (including Coronavirus portal information and identify high risk location(s) inclusive of all details from steps above and sends it to the Department Head and the International Travel Safety Oversight Committee (ITSOC). If after receiving the travel risk analysis, the department head agrees to support the travel, the Department forwards all travel documentation listed above to the College Dean (or a dean’s appointee) for their approval/denial. The College Dean (or a dean’s appointee) notifies UA Global Travel of their decision. If approved, UA Global forwards the travel information to Research Innovation & Impact for review. Research Innovation & Impact evaluates the request and approves or denies the travel and alerts UA Global Travel. UA Global Travel documents an Executive Summary of the trip and any ITSOC recommendations and sends to the Senior Vice President and/or Office of the Provost with all documentation for final approval or denial of the travel request.
